How often do we give up on a defense or an attack, grumbling to ourselves something like:

 

                oh well, that’s too large to be one of the known dead shapes”

 

How many groups could I have killed or saved, that I didn’t bother trying, due to such an attitude ?

 

Consider this situation:

 

                White to Play

 

 

Suppose white ataris the single stone inside ?  what happens ?  White seems to be pushing from behind.

 

Do the resolute ataris get white anywhere ?
