to FAA in 1966 and registered as N34. Retired in 1983. N34 reinstated by FAA Aug 4, 1985.
Used by FAA for education and to promote aviation and the FAA's heritage. Put on display at
Texas Air and Space Museum, Amarillo, Texas Feb 13, 2014.

was SOC and abandoned Apr 8, 1952, 790 miles due north of Point Barrow. Discovered by the Soviets near
the Pole of Relative Inaccessibility (80 km west of the drifting polar station SP-2) May 1954; repaired
with parts from a Soviet Air Force C-47 with 'zero hours' left (dispatched to the site to be cannibalised
and left behind); As operated by Polyarnye Avialinii registration painted on as 'CCCP H417'; in
natural metal c/s with probably dayglow tail and (partially) undersides of wings, later with an
additional 'lightning-bolt' cheatline; flown to Kresty Jun 15, 1954; used to resupply the
drifting polar station SP-3 Oct 1954; DBR in late 1954 on landing at SP-3 in bad visibility
when the landing gear struck a hummocked ice ridge and the aircraft belly-landed; fuselage
used as a sauna; eventually sank.

On Christmas Eve 1959, an R4D-8L crashed while trying to land during a whiteout condition
at Byrd Station in Antarctica. The aircraft was on final approach when the Dakota stalled and the right
wing dropped. The right wing hit the surface and broke. There were no injuries, but the
plane was destroyed.

corrected and the left wing dropped. The plane hit the snow surface while nearly inverted. The wings
broke off and the fuselage broke in two places before the plane caught fire and the JATO canisters
on board exploded. 6 killed.
