Ski-Jump II, a ski failed during taxi for takeoff in rough terrain Mar 27, 1952. The damaged aircraft 
was SOC and abandoned Apr 8, 1952, 790 miles due north of Point Barrow. Discovered by the Soviets near 
the Pole of Relative Inaccessibility (80 km west of the drifting polar station SP-2) May 1954; repaired 
with parts from a Soviet Air Force C-47 with 'zero hours' left (dispatched to the site to be cannibalised 
and left behind); As operated by Polyarnye Avialinii registration painted on as 'CCCP H417'; in 
natural metal c/s with probably dayglow tail and (partially) undersides of wings, later with an 
additional 'lightning-bolt' cheatline; flown to Kresty Jun 15, 1954; used to resupply the 
drifting polar station SP-3 Oct 1954; DBR in late 1954 on landing at SP-3 in bad visibility 
when the landing gear struck a hummocked ice ridge and the aircraft belly-landed; fuselage 
used as a sauna; eventually sank.
