141811 (MSN 128) The Navy accepted this aircraft on April 2, 1958.  It flew with Fighter Squadron VF-33 from 
the aircraft carrier USS INTREPID on various cruises from 1958-1961. Tigers began to phase out of front-line 
use in 1959. This Tiger was in and out of Navy storage facilities from 1961-1965, then served with 
Training Squadron VT-26 at Chase Field near Beeville, Texas. In 1962, the Tiger’s designation was 
changed from F11F-1 to F-11A. The aircraft briefly entered storage again in 1967 until flown by the Blue Angels.
The US Navy Blue Angels flew this aircraft during their 1968 season. The jet’s last performance was at an 
air show in Olathe, Kansas. It was then transferred to University of Kansas’s Aerospace Engineering Department. 
The Combat Air Museum, Topeka, Kansas acquired the Tiger from KU in June 1980.

41525 (VF-20) crashed into Koolau Mountains 4 miles from Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii during
practice rocket run Jun 15, 1944.  Pilot killed.  Two days
later the crash site was located and items and remains from the
wreckage were collected and buried at the site.  Human remains
were found in soil recovered from the site Sept 2006.

41572 (VBF-98) crashed at sea off Makassar Straight CVE-91 9/12/1945.  Pilot killed.
41621 (VF-18, USS Independence) lost at sea along with 58254 from USS Intrepid while
returning from attack mission near Luzon, Philippines Oct 29, 1944.  Following
attack on Clark Field, the planes returned to the carrier group and encountered a
severe storm.  Aircraft were waved off and instructed to circle.  58254 radioed
that 41621 was with him and that they were making a water landing.  Neither
aircraft nor pilots were ever seen again.
41637 (VF9N) overshot landing at NAAS Kingsville, TX Sept 1, 1945 and nosed over.  Pilot OK.
41638 (VF-87, USS Charger) missed landing Oct 15, 1944, went over the portside.  Tail section
caught in the catwalk, but font of the aircraft broke off and fell into water and sank.
Pilot escaped without injury.

41704 (VF-8) disappeared along with 66033 while on training flight  Sep 27, 1944.  Believed
to have been mid-air collision.
41834 (MSN A-3100) Served with VF-15 on USS Hornet, later VF-3 where it sustained damage in a wheels-up
landing at NAS Barbers Point, HI.  After repair assigned o VF-83 where it was used in a training
role until Feb 21, 1945.  After numerous transfers converted to F6F-3K target drone and painted red.  Used
in support of Operation Crossroads series of nuclear tests in the Pacific.  Transferred to NAS Norfolk
and made last flight Mar 25, 1947.   Assigned to National Air Museum Nov 3, 1948 and moved to storage 
in 1960 at the Paul Garber Restoration Facility, Suitland MD.  Loaned to USS Yorktown Museum at Charleston,
South Carolina in 1976.  Returned to NASM Mar 16, 1982.  In 1983 sent to Grumman Aerospace for complete
restoration.  In 1985 shipped back to the Garber Restoration and Storage Facility.  Noted
Dec 2005 in Udvar-Hazy faciliy of NASM, Chantilly, VA

and was not seen  again 23 Jun 23, 1945. Burning wreckage spotted after daylight in the rugged
Ko'olau mountain range 7 miles from the Kahuku airfield.  Land party was able to reach the wreckage after 3 days
of trailblazing.  Aircraft was completly destroyed.  Due to the extreme terrain and climate, pilot's remains 
were buried at the scene.

42874 ssigned to NACA Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, NAS Moffett Field, CA, later the NASA Ames 
Research Center  Jun 22, 1945 until Sep 9, 1960 as NACA 158 for variable stability research.
Modified for variable stability use. In 1948, the aircraft was modified by Ames engineers 
to become the world's first variable stability aircraft. Used for generalized studies of 
lateral-directional flying qualities criteria and as an in-flight simulator for new aircraft 
under development.  Now on display at the San Diego Air Museum.
43014 reported May 2006 to be under restoration at Fantasy of Flight,
Polk City, FL
