First flew Aug 16, 1948.  Redesignated XF-89 in 1948.  Crashed on Rosecrans Avenue, Manhattan Beach, CA Feb 22, 1950 
after making high speed low pass for Air Force officials at Hawthorne Airport (Northrop Field) .  Pilot 
parachuted safely, but flight engineer was killed.  Plane crashed 5 miles from factory, setting a 
below-ground storage tank afire.  Cause of accident was high-frequency, low amplitude aeroealastic 
flutter of both vertical and horizontal stabilizers.

5853 missing over Lake Superior Nov 23, 1953.  Aircraft took off to
intercept an unknown aircraft 160 mi NW of Kinross AFB.
F-89C aircraft was under radar control throughout the interception.
Radio contact was lost and the unknown aircraft and the F-89
merged together on the radar scope.  No further contact was
made, and the wreck was not found.  Pilot Lt. Felix Moncla, Jr 
and radar operator Lt. Robert Wilson missing.  This incident 
appears quite often in the UFO literature.  USAF report claims 
that the aircraft that was intercepted was a Canadian C-47, but 
Canadian officials have denied this.  A report that the 
wreck was found in 2005 has not been confirmed.

1870 (MSN 4447) converted to F-89J.  Collided on a test flight with Douglas owned and operated DC-7B N8210H over 
Sunland, CA Jan 31, 1957.  The wreckage of the DC-7 crashed into a school killing 3 students, injuring 70 others in 
addition to killing the 4 crew. The F-89 pilot was killed while the radar operator, severely injured, 
parachuted to safety.  The was the first N8210H DC-7B (MSN 45192/764) for Douglas Aircraft Company. Douglas Aircraft 
Company acquired the second N8210H,  another DC-7B (MSN 45194/787) built for Continental Air Lines on Mar 26, 1957.
Believe that this was the crash that gave rock star Ritchie Valens his fear of flying.  Ritchie attended that school but
was not at school that day because he was attending his grandfather's funeral.  Ritchie had only just gotten over his
fear of flying when the plane carrying him, Buddy Holly, J. P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) and pilot Roger
Peterson crashed in Iowa on February 3, 1959, killing all four onboard.
