610 crashed Feb 11, 1958 at Ellsworth AFB due to total power loss during final approach. Two on board killed,
plus 3 ground personnel. The cause of the crash was determined to be from condensed water in the
fuel lines that froze and clogged fuel filters (it was previously unknown that jet fuel absorbs water
vapor from the atmosphere). After this determination, over 200 previous ‘cause unknown’ aircraft l
osses were attributed to fuel icing.

Assigned to Panama.
Destroyed in Panama Jun 15, 1987. The aircraft bounced off the Panama Canal during night vision
goggle training. The pilots were demonstrating how depth perception could be affected while over
water. The radar altimeter was misreading by 100ft. When the aircraft hit the water the right
front landing gear was ripped off and the left rear gear was twisted. The cargo ramp was
partially ripped off and the airframe was distorted. Damaged, the aircraft returned to Fort
Sherman where another aircraft visually checked the damage. It was determined that the aircraft
was too badly damaged to land safely and it was put down inside the shark barricade at the
Fort Sherman housing area. The aircraft was floating in the surf as the crew evacuated.
Corrosion caused by the immersion in salt water was too severe and the aircraft was determined
to be a total loss. Believed to have been salvaged to Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ.
