General Dynamics YF-16A Fighting Falcon
MSN 61-1/6.
0745 modified as F-16/101 with GE F101 engine. Now a part of USAF traveling
exhibit for USAF recruiting.
0745 is on display at WPAFB marked as 79-0317. It is part of a traveling
display
0746 (MSN 61-2) reported Jun 2006 stored at LMTAS, Fort Worth. In 2009 was gate guard at McEntire ANGB, South Carolina.
It has been heavily modified to resemble a Block 52 F-16C.
0747 modified as F-16XL/B with cranked-arrow wing. The F-16XL aircraft were built by General Dynamics Corp.
at Ft. Worth, Texas, as prototypes for a derivative fighter evaluation program conducted by the Air Force
between 1982 and 1985. F-16XL-2, twin seat aircraft. Assigned to NASA Dryden Flight Research Center,
Edwards AFB, CA, Feb 1991 to Oct 1996. Registered as NASA 848.
Used to improve laminar airflow on aircraft flying at sustained supersonic speeds.
Used to conduct a more comprehensive research effort, consisting of two phases. The first phase used a
passive glove on the right wing to obtain baseline configuration data that served in the design of
the active glove, which was installed over a portion of the left wing. This effort was far more
comprehensive than the initial flight phase, and explored regions of transition and the maximum
extent of laminar flow obtained over a wider range of supersonic Mach numbers.
The project flew the F-16XL-2 45 times between Oct.13, 1995, and Nov. 26, 1996, obtaining significant
amounts of valuable flight research data.
0748 on display at Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado
0749 modified as F-16XL/A with cranked-arrow wing. The F-16XL aircraft were built by General Dynamics Corp.
at Ft. Worth, Texas, as prototypes for a derivative fighter evaluation program conducted by the
Air Force between 1982 and 1985. F-16XL-1, single seat aircraft.
Assigned to NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards AFB, CA, May 1988 to Oct 1997.
Registered as NASA 849. Used to improve laminar airflow on aircraft flying at sustained supersonic speeds.
NASA Dryden Flight Research Center's F-16XL-1 aircraft (tail number 849) testbed aircraft supported
several flight research projects during the 1990s. The XL-1 aircraft was upgraded with a new Digital
Flight Control System (DFCS) in 1997. The DFCS upgrade allowed NASA's F-16XL-1 the flexibility needed
to perform experiments which required major new flight control functions or capabilities. The initial
flight test objectives for the modified aircraft verified that the DFCS functioned properly and that
the performance and handling qualities were acceptable throughout the flight envelope.
The digital flight control system was compatible with a Research Flight Control System (RFCS) which
could be installed when necessary. RFCS capability provided a flexible, reliable and safe means
to modify the aircraft control system. The RFCS computer significantly increased computational
speed and computer memory.
The XL-1 aircraft was previously used in NASA's Cranked-Arrow Wing Aerodynamics Project, or CAWAP,
which provided aerodynamic data for NASA's High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) research program.
The unique cranked-arrow wing shape provided better low-speed lift and handling characteristics than
the modified "double-delta" wing used on the Concorde supersonic transport (SST).
The XL-1 participated in NASA's 1995 sonic boom study, in which the aircraft flew 200 feet behind a
NASA SR-71 to probe the boundary of the SR-71's supersonic shock wave. The studies helped HSCT
engineers to better understand supersonic shock waves in order to reduce sonic boom intensity
near populated areas.
0750 modified as AFTI test bed. Assigned to NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards AFB, CA.
The AFTI (Advanced Fighter Technology Integration) /F-16 program was a joint NASA/USAF effort
evaluating advanced digital flight controls, automated maneuvering, voice-activated controls,
sensors, and close-air support attack systems on a modified F-16.
Delivered to USAF Museum 11Feb01. Now the National Museum of the US Air Force
