soldier armed with a sub-machine gun and landed on the sandbar so

the Wash.  All crew except pilots bailed out over land.
Pilots jettisoned bombs in the Wash and then jumped.
Copilot was rescued, pilot killed.

Restored at Museum of Flight, Renton, WA.  Flew for the
first time May 9, 1998.  At the time, was only Seattle-built B-17F still flying.  
Made its last flight Dec 2003, and was put on display at Boeing Field
