31988 (381st BG) crashed and burned on takeoff Apr 22, 1944 at Polebrook.

after being severely damaged by flak and fighters over 
southern Germany.  Crew bailed out safely but aircraft flew on
and crashlanded in forest clearing at southern end of Lake
Baldegger.  Plane later dismantled, parts stored at
Dubendorf and scrapped after the war.

in back garden of No 18 Downview Road with wingtip within six
feet of back door of house.  Two crew members had been slightly
injured.  Pilot took tea with the lady of the house. 25 years
later to the day (Jul 4, 1969) he returned to take tea with her
again.
